The romance of a bygone age of adventure is often associated with spending the night in a safari camp under canvas. Fortunately, there are dozens of tented safari lodges and camps all across Southern and East Africa that allows you to recapture this magic.
Lodges in the Masai Mara offer amenities that you would expect in excellent hotels, with many of the tents having air-conditioning, luxury bathrooms, and private plunge pools!
For people on a tighter budget, there are other tented lodges and camps that offer equally impressive accommodation but may be in smaller tents with only double beds and no bathroom…it’s still a long way from the traditional idea of ‘camping in a tent.’
Especially in East Africa, many of the tented camps are what is known as ‘semi-permanent’. Semi-permanent camps are those that have no permanent cement structures or brick/stone built areas. These type of camps can be completely dismantled, leaving a virgin site that has not disturbed the natural environment. This also enhances the Eco-friendliness aspect.
Another exciting mobile camp option, which is available at many lodges in East Africa for guests staying three nights or longer, is to do a mobile/ fly camp safari for one night. The camp staff will set up the tents ahead of time and you either walk to your mobile camp as part of your day’s game drive activity or you drive there after your last game drive. As with the other mobile camps, the fly camping is about adventure, not luxury. Your bed will be comfortable and the crew will serve you amazing meals in the middle of the wilderness.
